Response 1 - December

Complete a Journal Response on your Independent Reading book. Use at least 2 sentence leads from your Reading FOLDER.

Remember: A summary of the book is not quite as interesting as your thoughts, questions or other comments about the book. There are times when summaries are important; however, this is not the time.

With this in mind please use capital letters where appropriate and correct punctuation.

Be sure to include the title of your book and its author so others who read your comment will understand.

Your Response might start out something like this . . .

Title:
Author:
Sentence Lead starter

If you finish early be sure to read previous posts and comments on our blog to see if anyone has referenced a comment that you have made.

As you read other comments do you notice anyone who has read a book that you are reading/have read. If so, what comments do you have for them?

Are You Technology Savvy?

As part of the eMINTS program you are using computers in our class weekly. You can now consider yourself a "blogger." As the year progresses you will have more practice using Microsoft programs such as Word and PowerPoint.

As defined by Merriam Webster's Dictionary. . . savvy means to know; understand.

Evaluate how technology savvy you are. . . how well do you understand computers? Does using computers come easy to you? OR are computers like another world that you can't seem to understand?

On a scale of 1-10 rate your tech savviness OR your technology knowledge. 10 being the highest level of technology/computer knowledge AND 1 being the lowest. If you rate yourself as a 10 you could easily help someone who rated themself as a 1.

Know of Any Good Books!

Well, this week we began our Book It Program. Hopefully, you have been reading 20 minutes per night at home. Tomorrow, Friday, we will once again visit our school library. You will have the opportunity to renew or return/checkout new books.

To prepare for the library visit, we want to know all about great fictional books! Write a comment about your favorite book. Tell us why you like the book. Or what you think of the book. Make sure to include the title and author of your book so others may read it too! You can also tell who you would recommend the book to and why you would recommend that book.

Please include at least one of the following as well. . .

What happens in your book? Why does it happen? Who is your favorite character and why? But, don't give away the ending!

Maybe, someone will be encouraged to check out the your favorite book and enjoy it just as much as you!
Be sure you read other comments before leaving the blog.

Becoming Active Readers

This year we will spend time becoming better active readers. We had a little practice with this already.

Think back to today's lesson:

What does it mean to "read actively"?

How will reading actively help you become a better reader?

What things can you do to help you become an active reader?

As you make your comments, please be sure to use correct punctuation, spelling, capital letters, etc.

Good Readers

Good readers use the reading comprehension strategies as they read. You have heard me say this several times already and we have completed only the first month of school. The reading comprehension stratgies include
  • making connections
  • asking questions
  • visualizing
  • predicting
  • inferring
  • activating your prior knowledge
  • monitoring your comprehension
  • determining what's important
  • syntheszing

Please answer the following as you comment today . . .

1. Describe which strategy is the easiest for you and why.

2. Describe which stragtey is the hardest for you and why.

3. What are you looking forward to this year in reading?

Anyone Blog?

Welcome! This is the first posting of many in 5th, 6th and 7th Periods' Class Reading Blog. Today's goal is to get you acquainted with blogging.

Remember from our activity in class a few weeks ago, where we simulated a blog after reading a poem. Each person responded or commented on the poem which was considered a post. You exchanged papers (using the basketball hoop/basket) with a classmate and read that person's paper, after which you commented again. (We repeated this several times.)

From that activity, I hope you remember that once you enter our online class blog, you FIRST READ the posting(s) and previous comments and THEN respond by adding a comment. How many of you have your own blog?

If so, how do you use it?

What is its purpose?

If no, what blog would you create?

Please answer these questions when you make a comment. NEVER include your full name or anyone else's in your comment. (for example: a student named Jane Doe should leave her name as only as Jane D.)
